NT 06 Young Jesus at the Temple

Reference: Luke 2:39-52

Big Idea and Motions: Jesus came in human skin to save us from our sins.
Jesus - form a cross with your forearms
Human skin - pinch some skin on your arm or neck
Save - make the baseball “Safe!” sign
Sins - two thumbs down

Verse / Motions: Luke 19:10 - For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.
For - hold up four fingers
Son - pretend to hold a baby
Man - flex your muscles
Seek - pretend to look through binoculars
Save - make the baseball “Safe!” sign
Lost - scratch your head and look around like you don’t know where you are

Questions to Ask Throughout the Week
What town did Jesus grow up in? (Nazareth.)
How old was Jesus in today’s story? (12.)
What city did Jesus’ family travel to? (Jerusalem.)
Who did Mary and Joseph forget on the way back from Jerusalem? (Jesus.)
What was Jesus doing in Jerusalem by himself? (At the temple, asking questions of the teachers.)
How many days did it take Mary and Joseph to find Jesus? (3.)
What did the teachers think of Jesus’ answers? (They were amazed.)
Did Jesus have to grow, learn, and obey his parents like a regular kid? (Yes.)
What is today’s big idea? (Jesus came in human skin to save us from sin.)

Big Idea and Motions: Jesus came as a human to save us from sin.

Sins - two thumbs down

Verse and Motions: Matthew 1:21 - She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (ESV)
Bear - squeeze your belly
Son - pretend to cradle a baby
Call - pretend to call on a phone
Jesus - form a cross with your forearms
Save - make the baseball “Safe!” sign
People - turn your hands upside down, interlock your fingers and wiggle them
Sins - two thumbs down

Questions to Ask Throughout the Week
Who was the girl in today’s story? (Mary.)
Who appeared to her? (The angel Gabriel.)
What did Gabriel say Mary was going to have? (A baby.)
Name one thing Gabriel said about the baby. (Son of God, King, rule forever, name him Jesus.)
What happened to Mary when the Holy Spirit came down to Mary? (She became pregnant.)
Who was promised to be married to Mary? (Joseph.)
When Joseph found out Mary was pregnant, what was he going to do? (Divorce her.)
What did the angel in Joseph’s dream say? (Marry Mary; her baby is from the Holy Spirit.)
What does Jesus’ name mean? (Savior.)
What is today’s big idea? (Jesus came as a human to save us from our sins.)

NT 01 Zechariah and Elizabeth

Big Idea and Motions: God always means what he says.

  • God - point up
  • Always - throw your arms in a wide circle
  • Means - hold one palm facing up; pound the bottom of your other fist into your palm.
  • Says - make your hand talk like a puppet


Verse and Motions: Numbers 23:19a - God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. (ESV)

  • God - point up
  • Is Not - wag your finger “No”
  • Man - flex your muscles to look “manly”
  • Lie - point to your lips
  • Son of man - pretend to cradle a baby
  • Change - pretend to grip the top and bottom of a steering wheel, then turn it 180°
  • Mind - tap your brain


Questions to Ask Throughout the Week

  • Who were the two old people in today’s story? (Zechariah and Elizabeth.)
  • What was Zechariah’s job? (Priest.)
  • Who appeared to Zechariah in the temple? (The angel Gabriel.)
  • What was Gabriel’s message? (You’ll have a son.)
  • What happened when Zechariah didn’t believe the angel? (He couldn’t speak.)
  • Who came to visit Elizabeth when she was pregnant? (Mary, Jesus’ mother.)
  • What did baby John do in Elizabeth’s belly when Mary came? (Leaped for joy.)
  • What did John grow up to be? (A prophet who helped people get ready for Jesus.)

  • With us - hug yourself

  • Behold - cup your hands around your mouth and say “Behold!” dramatically
  • I am - point 
  • With you - hug yourself
  • Always - draw repeated circles in the air with your finger
  • End of the age - pound the bottom of your fist on your palm as you say each of these four words


Questions to Ask Throughout the Week

  • Who was the king of Persia? (King Xerxes.)
  • What “J” word describes the Israelites in today’s story? (Jews.)
  • What Jew did King Xerxes make queen of Persia? (Esther.)
  • Who was Esther’s adoptive father? (Mordecai.)
  • How did Mordecai save King Xerxes? (He heard about two guards who wanted to kill the king.)
  • Why was Haman mad at Mordecai? (Mordecai didn’t bow before him.)
  • What did Haman decide to do? (Destroy all the Jews.)
  • Before Esther went to ask the king to save the Jews, what did she have the people do? (Not eat, pray.)
  • Did King Xerxes listen to Esther’s request to not destroy her people? (Yes.)
