Reference: Luke 22:54-62
Story Summary:
Before Jesus was arrested, he told his disciples that God's enemies wanted to get them. But one of the disciples, Peter, said that he was willing to go to prison and death with Jesus. But Jesus said to Peter, "Before the rooster crows today, you'll say three times that you don't know me."
When Jesus was arrested, the disciples ran away, but Peter followed Jesus from far away. He sat in a courtyard near where they were holding Jesus. A female servant said of Peter, "This man was with Jesus." But Peter said he didn't know him. A little while later, someone said to Peter, "You're one of Jesus' disciples." But Peter yelled, "No, I'm not!"
Still later, another person said about Peter, "This fellow must have been with Jesus!" But Peter cursed at the man and said, "I don't know what you're talking about!" After Peter denied Jesus for a third time, a rooster crowed. Jesus looked at Peter, and Peter began to weep.
After Jesus rose from the dead, he went to Peter. He forgave Peter for the three times he said he didn't know Jesus.

NT 35 Jesus is Betrayed
Reference: Matthew 26:47-56
Story Summary:
The chief priests, elders, and Pharisees wanted to arrest Jesus. Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples, came to them. He agreed to betray Jesus for 30 silver coins.
Judas thought this was secret, but at the last supper, Jesus made it clear that he knew what Judas had done. Sometime during that meal, Judas left. He went and got a crowd of men with swords and clubs. Jesus and the rest of the disciples went to the garden of Gethsemane.
After Jesus prayed in the garden, Judas arrived with the men to arrest Jesus. Peter pulled out a sword to protect Jesus. He swung his sword and chopped off one of the men’s ears. Jesus healed the man and told Peter to put his sword away. "Don't you know I could call my Father and he'd send 70,000 angels to fight these men?" Jesus hadn't come to fight these men or even run away.
Judas' men arrested Jesus and Jesus let them. All of the eleven other disciples, including brave Peter and his sword, ran away, leaving Jesus all alone.

NT 34 Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane

Story Summary:
After the last supper, Jesus and the disciples went to Gethsemane, a garden of olive trees. Jesus took three of his disciples, Peter, James, and John, and went further into the garden. "Keep watch," Jesus said, before going off to pray.
Jesus prayed to God the Father. "If it's possible, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Still, may your will be done." Jesus was asking God the Father if there was any way to avoid the sufferings of the cross.
After praying, Jesus returned to the three disciples. He found them sleeping. He told them to watch and pray, so they could endure the upcoming temptation. Once again, Jesus left and prayed the same thing, asking God to remove the cup of suffering he was about to endure. Still, he ended his prayer telling the Father to do what he wanted, not what Jesus wanted.
For a second time, he returned and found the disciples sleeping. He left and prayed the same prayer
a third time. As he prayed, his sweat was like drops of blood because he was so troubled. God saw Jesus' trouble and sent an angel to comfort him.

NT 33 The Last Supper and Communion
Reference: Matthew 26:17-29
Story Summary:
The night before Jesus died on the cross, he shared a meal with his disciples. We call it the "Last Supper" because it was the last meal Jesus ate before he died. At that meal, Jesus and his disciples shared bread and wine.
When Jesus gave them the bread to eat, Jesus said, "This is my body, which is given for you." When he gave them the wine to drink, he said, "This is my blood of the new covenant. It is poured out to forgive the sins of many." Jesus told the disciples to eat a meal in this special way regularly as a way to remember him.
And Jesus' disciples did just that. They came together and ate a meal they called the "Lord's Supper". At this meal, they ate bread. When they ate the bread, they remembered that Jesus gave his body for their sins when he suffered and died on the cross. When they drank the wine, they remembered that Jesus bled when he died on the cross for their sins.
When the disciples started new churches, they taught the people to eat the Lord's Supper, too. The believers in the churches ate bread and drank wine to remember Jesus' body and blood.

NT 32 Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet
Reference: John 13:1-17
Story Summary:
Many of the people who followed Jesus thought they knew why he had come to earth. They thought Jesus would lead them to defeat their enemies, the Romans, in battle and then rule as a king. Some of Jesus’ disciples even argued about which one of them was the most important. They thought they might be #2 in charge when Jesus became king.
But Jesus didn’t come for those reasons. The night before Jesus died, he ate the Passover meal with his disciples. He got up from the meal, wrapped a towel around him, and began washing his disciples’ feet. Peter, one of his disciples, wanted Jesus to stop. Washing dirty feet was a job for a servant, he thought. But Jesus told him he needed to do so and, eventually, Peter let Jesus wash his feet.
Jesus told his disciples, “I’m your Lord and Teacher, and I’ve washed your feet. This is an example for you to do the same.” Jesus hadn’t come to defeat the Romans and rule like a king. He’d come to serve others and die for our sins.

NT 31 The Triumphal Entry

Story Summary:
Jesus was headed to Jerusalem. He sent his disciples ahead of him to borrow a donkey for him to ride. When its owners wanted to know what they were doing, the disciples said what Jesus told them to say: "the Lord needs it."
As Jesus rode along, the people gave him a king's welcome. They spread coats on the ground before Jesus, waved palm branches, and shouted, "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" Many people thought that Jesus had come to defeat their enemies, the soldiers of Rome, and become their new king.
The Pharisees were there, upset that the crowd was praising Jesus. They told Jesus to tell them to stop, but Jesus would not do so.
Days later, the people were stopped cheering for Jesus because he wasn't the king they wanted. Instead, they cheered for his death. But that's exactly why Jesus had come: to die on the cross and rise again for sinners.

EX 05 Abraham Sacrifices Isaac
Reference: Genesis 22:1-14
Story Summary:
God tested Abraham. God said, “Go to Moriah. Give your only son to me there as a burnt offering.” Early the next morning Abraham took two servants and his son Isaac. He started out for the place God had shown him.
When Abraham saw the place a long way off. He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey. I and the boy will go over there and worship. Then we’ll come back to you.”
Abraham had Isaac carry the wood for the offering. Abraham carried the fire and the knife. Isaac said, “Where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God himself will provide the lamb.” They reached the place God had shown Abraham. There Abraham built an altar.. He tied up his son Isaac. Abraham placed him on top of the wood. Then he picked up the knife to kill his son. But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Do not lay a hand on the boy. Now I know that you would do anything for God. You have not held back from me your your only son.”
Abraham saw a ram caught in a bush. He sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham named that place, "The Lord Will Provide.”
Big Idea and Motions: We know God loves us because he gave his son.
